NMEC Hosts Major International Event with Chongqing Municipality: “When the Yangtze Meets the Nile”

As part of its efforts to strengthen cultural cooperation and exchange between Egypt and the People’s Republic of China, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) organized a major international event in collaboration with the Chongqing Municipality, entitled “When the Yangtze Meets the Nile.”
In his opening remarks, Dr. Tayeb Abbas welcomed the guests, stressing that NMEC serves as a dynamic platform for dialogue, creativity, and cultural exchange. He highlighted that the event embodies the museum’s philosophy of building bridges between two great civilizations — the Nile and the Yangtze.
The program featured a series of distinguished lectures, including talks on the Nile’s role in the flourishing of Egyptian civilization, global perspectives on water heritage and hydrological systems, and a recorded address from the Chinese side on the water legacy of the Yangtze River.
A high-level panel discussion explored the role of rivers in shaping civilizational heritage, alongside traditional handicraft workshops and cultural performances from Chongqing. The event also included the screening of the joint Egyptian–Chinese documentary “When the Yangtze Meets the Nile.”
From September 2–8, 2025, NMEC is hosting a cultural exhibition featuring digital displays and photographs on China’s water heritage, an exhibition on intangible heritage and traditional crafts, and a special pavilion for Chinese brands under the theme “China, Opportunity.”
The Chinese delegation also enjoyed an extensive tour of NMEC’s galleries, including the Main Exhibition Hall, the Royal Mummies Hall, and the Egyptian Textile Hall, where they expressed their admiration for the museum’s unique collection that reflects the depth and continuity of Egyptian civilization.
