The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Al-Fustat has launched the fourth season of the Tabliyet Masr initiative under the theme “Reviving the Past… Documenting the Present for a sustainable Future,” in collaboration with SADKO.

The opening ceremony featured an art exhibition titled “Street Food as Creative Expression,” showcasing installations, cinematic scenes, and marionette show inspired by popular heritage and classic Egyptian cinema, offering an immersive experience that blends art with collective memory.

The activities of the copening ceremony conclude with a tasting experience of traditional Egyptian dishes, allowing visitors to engage with heritage in a lively, popular atmosphere that received strong public interaction, affirming the initiative’s role in preserving food heritage and raising cultural awareness among future generations.

The season’s program includes a range of activities, such as panel discussions on popular dishes across Egypt’s governorates, workshops dedicated to documenting culinary heritage, workshops on extracting natural dyes from food, as well as sessions designed for children and persons with disabilities to introduce them to traditional foods and the values of health and environmental awareness.

As part of the celebrations marking the New Year and the Glorious Christmas holidays, NMEC has launched the “Spirit and Love” events with the opening of a temporary archaeological exhibition in the Egyptian Textile Gallery, which will run for two months. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Coptic Museum in Cairo and was inaugurated in the presence of a delegation from the Church, alongside a number of public figures and individuals interested in Coptic heritage and art.

The exhibition features a distinguished and rare selection of masterpieces of Coptic art, displayed to the public for the first time. These include icons, Coptic manuscripts, and artistic objects that were used in monasteries and churches. Among the highlights are an icon depicting the Birth of the Virgin Mary and a stone relief portraying her nursing Jesus Christ, reflecting the richness of this heritage and its artistic and symbolic value.

In celebration of World Arabic Language Day, NMEC organized a distinguished cultural and artistic event under the theme “A Heritage Renewed through a Radiant Script,” in collaboration with the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Cairo, the Friends of NMEC Association, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the Arabic Language Academy, and the Sufi Zadeh family. The event underscored the central role of the Arabic language as one of the most important pillars of cultural and human identity.

This event comes within the framework of the Museum’s role as a cultural and educational institution committed to raising awareness of Egyptian heritage and reinforcing its civilizational values, and out of firm belief in the importance of the Arabic language and its historical status as a vessel of identity and the collective memory of the nation.

The event also witnessed the opening of an art exhibition in partnership with the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Cairo, featuring a collection of artworks highlighting the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy, alongside a distinguished heritage exhibition showcasing the works and collections of the Sufi Zadeh family, including artworks and documentary films that chronicle their artistic journey.

As part of the collaboration with Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, a selection of artworks celebrating the beauty of Arabic calligraphy was displayed, and a series of interactive workshops were organized with the participation of 25 Al-Azhar students. These included workshops on writing on leather, writing names in various styles of Arabic calligraphy, printing on paper, and freehand drawing of calligraphic art. The workshops received wide interest and acclaim from visitors.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization organized an extensive event in celebration of International Museum Day, held this year under the theme: “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities.” The event was held in collaboration with the Egyptian National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo.
The event saw broad participation from archaeologists, cultural and museum specialists, and representatives of international organizations. It highlighted Egypt’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the role of museums as dynamic centers for learning, dialogue, and sustainable development.
On the sidelines of the celebration, the winners of the 2025 Best Museum Practices Awards were announced. These awards, organized in collaboration between the Museums Sector and the Egyptian National Committee of ICOM, aim to support excellence and innovation in museum work.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization was awarded the Shield of Excellence in the category of Community Engagement and Inclusive Museum Practices for the “Tabliyet Masr” project — one of the leading initiatives for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and enhancing the museum’s connection with the local community.
Also on the sidelines of the celebration, the temporary exhibition “Hands That Create Eternity” was inaugurated. Running for two weeks, the exhibition features rare artifacts displayed for the first time and highlights the dedicated efforts of Egyptian conservators in preserving civilizational heritage.
The event also included rich scholarly sessions that explored:
* UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
* The Museum as an Educational Institution Empowering Communities
* And a roundtable discussion titled “Museums in Times of Conflict, Challenges, and Emergencies,” which examined efforts to safeguard heritage under exceptional circumstances and reviewed the roles of UNESCO and its partners in this field.

Celebrating the Festive Season: A Coptic Art Exhibition at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

Under the title “The Annunciation,” the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat has inaugurated a temporary archaeological exhibition in the Egyptian Textile Hall, showcasing masterpieces of Coptic art in celebration of the festive Christmas season.

Dr. El-Tayeb Abbas, the museum’s Executive Director, emphasized that the exhibition offers an exceptional opportunity for enthusiasts of Coptic heritage and art to explore aspects of Egyptian heritage that embody values of tolerance and peace. This initiative aligns with the museum’s commitment to highlighting cultural and traditional celebrations.

The exhibition features a unique collection of artifacts that narrate the beauty of Coptic art, including a selection of icons depicting the Nativity of Christ, various Coptic symbols executed in diverse artistic styles, wooden crafts, and more.

Treasures Through Folk Art Between Egypt and Peru

Titled “Treasures Through Folk Art Between Egypt and Peru,” NMEC inaugurated a heritage art exhibition in collaboration with the Embassy of Peru in Cairo. The exhibition was held in the museum’s Textile Gallery. This exhibition was part of the ongoing collaboration between the museum and the Republic of Peru, showcasing the decorative ceramic folk art of artists and craftsmen from both Egypt and Peru. It took place on Sunday, July 7, 2024.



“Inspection trips on archaeological sites in Upper Egypt and the archives of Eduardo Toda” Exhibiton

Dr. Ahmed Ghoniem, Chief Executive Officer of the Egyptian National Museum of Civilization, Fatitat, Ambassador Alvaro Iranzo of Spain, Cairo, opened an exhibition of archival images entitled “Inspection trips on archaeological sites in Upper Egypt and the archives of Eduardo Toda”, organized in cooperation between the Museum and the embassy of Spain in Cairo. The exhibition features a number of photographs from the collection of Eduardo Toda y Güell, who served as the Spanish Vice Consul in Cairo between 1884 and 1886, pointing out that these photographs are a documentation of the work of the Egyptian antiquities during the nineteenth century.

Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of NMEC and the Spanish Ambassador Alvaro Iranzo in Cairo, opened an exhibition of archival images entitled “Inspection Trips on Archaeological Sites in Upper Egypt and the Archives of Eduardo Toda” organized between NMEC and the Spanish embassy in Cairo. The exhibition featured photographs from the collection of Eduardo Toda y Güell, who served as the Spanish Vice Consul in Cairo between 1884 and 1886. It is believed that those images are a documentation of the work of the Egyptian antiquities during the nineteenth century.
